Frequently Asked Questions
What types of notarization are there?
- In-Person: The traditional version — signer and notary in the same location at the same time.
- IPEN / eNotary: Same physical location, but signing an electronic document instead of paper.
- Remote Online Notarization (RON): Signer and notary are in different places and appear on live video to sign and seal an electronic document.
What types of notarization can you do?
All three! For in-person and IPEN/eNotary you must be near Pueblo, CO. RON is available for anyone.
What kinds of documents can you notarize?
- Affidavits
- Trusts
- Wills
- Power of Attorney
- Medical Directives
- Certified copies**
- And more — reach out if you're not sure.
**Colorado Notaries cannot certify copies of records from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Those must come from CDPHE directly.
What types of ID can I use?
- Valid state-issued ID, driver's license, or US passport
- Valid foreign ID card or passport
- In-person: Colorado allows an ID expired up to one year
- A credible witness (in-person or online, with strict requirements)
If your foreign ID doesn't include English, we may need to explore a credible witness or alternative ID.
What is a credible witness?
If you don't have approved identification, someone who knows you personally and has appropriate ID can make a sworn statement to your identity. For online notarizations, the credible witness must know both the signer and the notary.
How does identity verification work online?
The same ID requirements apply. You'll also complete a Knowledge Based Assessment (KBA) — a timed questionnaire using publicly available data to verify your identity, with questions like "Which of the following addresses have you lived at?"
What about biometrics?
Colorado does not allow biometrics for identity authentication at this time. As a Colorado notary, I follow Colorado law regardless of where you are located.
Why do you charge a platform fee for RON?
Colorado requires all RON to take place on an approved platform that ensures legal compliance. Those platforms charge for their service — you and I share that cost.
Will my notarization be valid if I'm not in Colorado?
Yes. States recognize RON from other states the same way they recognize paper notarizations done in a different state.
I am outside the US. Can you notarize for me?
It depends:
- US citizen outside the US — yes.
- Foreign national— not as a Colorado notary, but there are options. States that allow biometric authentication (like Florida) can notarize for foreign nationals. Feel free to reach out and I'll point you in the right direction.
