What Types of ID Can I Use?
A valid state issued ID, driver license, or US issued passport.
A valid foreign ID card or passport.
In person, Colorado allows me to accept an ID expired up to one year.
A credible witness can be used either online or in person, but there are strict requirements.
Note: If your foreign ID card does not include English, we may need to explore using a credible witness or other form of ID instead.
What is a Credible Witness?
If you lack any of the approved identification, someone who knows you personally and does have appropriate ID can do a sworn statement to your identity.
Online, a credible witness must know the signer (you) and the notary (me).
How Does my identity get verified online?
The same ID requirements apply. A valid state ID/driver license, or passport.
Online you will also be required to do a Knowledge Based Assessment (KBA).
What is a Knowledge Based Assessment?
A Knowledge Based Assessment is a timed questionnaire that pulls data from publicly available information to ask you questions about yourself to establish your identity. It usually involves questions such as "Which of the following addresses have you ever lived at?" and "Do you now or have you ever owned (insert type of car here)?"
What about biometrics?
Colorado does not allow the use of biometrics to authenticate identity at this time. As a Colorado notary, I must follow Colorado law even if you are not a Colorado resident.
Why do you charge a platform fee?
Colorado requires all RON to occur with approved platforms that assist with compliance with Colorado law for RON. These platforms, predictably, charge fees to provide their service. As the notary, you and I share this cost.
Will my notarization be valid if I'm not in Colorado?
Yes! States recognize RON from other states, the same way they recognize a paper notarization from a different state.
I am outside the US. Can you notarize for me?
The answer is "It depends."
If you are a US citizen located outside the US, then yes. If you are a foreign national, then no. BUT, hope is not lost.
The Good News: US states that allow Biometrics to do authentication (not just KBA) can do notarization for individuals who are foreign nationals. Search for notaries in states that allow RON and biometrics. Florida is popular for this, but they aren't the only state.
You are always welcome to ask me questions if you need help finding a direction.
